Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black hole: Eikonal instability

Abstract: "Perturbations of asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in theories with higher curvature corrections (such as Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet one) play an important role in our attempts to understand the dual field theory at an intermediate t Hooft coupling through the AdS/CFT correspondence.  We shall analyze in detail the gravitational perturbations of spherical Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes. These black holes suffer from a special kind of gravitational instability (eikonal), which develops at high multipole numbers. The instability occurs not only for small, but also for large black holes  and imply constrains on possible holographic applicability of the Gauss-Bonnet black hole background. It is shown that the quasinormal spectrum consists of two different types of modes: perturibative and non-perturbative in Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $\alpha$. The perturbative Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet modes can be expressed analytically through linear (in $\alpha$) corrections to their Einsteinian limits."

Searching for pulsars and FRBs in real-time

Absract: In my talk I will introduce the Oxford e-Research Centre based at University of Oxford. I will also introduce Astro-Accelerate project and its goal to produce software for real-time data processing using GPUs. There are two reasons for real-time data processing first is sheer amount of data produced by modern radio telescopes, like LOFAR, MWA or currently build SKA. These data cannot be stored. The second is multi-wave astronomy. I will also describe basic techniques used for detection of pulsars and FRBs. Correctly processing the data is vital, because with real-time data processing we could loose scientifically important data.
